Our clients tasked us with completely re-imagining and redesigning their live-work loft in the Barker Block building, located in the vibrant Arts District of Downtown Los Angeles. Barker Block is a unique living concept that blends modern design and amenities with an original warehouse structure, situated in one of the city’s most authentic neighborhoods. This environment fuses life, art and energy to offer a captivating and dynamic living experience. Our goal was to bring this ethos of communal energy inside the unit. We envisioned the loft as a series of interconnected spaces dedicated to living, working, exercising and entertaining. These areas are designed to be activated throughout the day, adapting to various times and functions. The centerpiece of our design is a custom kitchen island and dining table ensemble that seamlessly combines three functions: prep island, breakfast bar, and dining table. This versatile piece slides, pivots, and opens to accommodate guests for dinner, then retracts to a streamlined position when not in use. The living room is an expansive, open area featuring custom millwork shelves and low walls to delineate it from the working zones and adjacent bedroom. At its core is a Mario Bellini Camaleonda sofa, illuminated by an oversized Nelson Saucer pendant light. The space is anchored by a custom coffee table that complements the geometric design of a rug by Nordic Knots, tying the room together with a cohesive, modern aesthetic. To the gallery side is a custom millwork piece that houses in-home gym equipment and becomes a workout bench by day and a reading nook by night.
